QUITO, Ecuador (AP) - A populist former army colonel who led a coup in 2000 and has pledged to fight corruption was elected as Ecuador's sixth president in six years, despite concerns that some of his radical supporters would scare investors.
Lucio Gutierrez, 45, won 54.3 percent support in Sunday's runoff vote, topping the 45.7 gained by billionaire Alvaro Noboa, who counts among his friends several members of the Kennedy clan and Hollywood actors such as Charlton Heston.
***As usual, AP gets right to the meat of the matter.***

In other news:
Speaking of which, why does someone who is a billionaire have to have that word before their name in every frigging story? Why can't I insist on being called a "thousandaire?"
Every goddamned mention of that dink Tom Golisano's ego-bloating run for New York governor referred to him on first reference as "billionaire" Tom Golisano. I nearly wore out Mr. Delete Key removing it.
Same with constructions like "actor" Tom Cruise. I guess this is supposed to distinguish him from sheetmetal worker Tom Cruise, who also was present at the Academy Awards ceremony.
Where the hell is my coffee?
